Why does my drain keep clogging, even after I clear it?
Updated Feb 2026
If a drain clears with a plunger or a drain-cleaning product but clogs again within days or weeks, the problem is very likely further down the line than a simple surface blockage — grease, roots, or a partial collapse further into the pipe are common culprits.
Repeated clogging in one specific fixture (just one sink, for example) usually points to something local to that line, while multiple fixtures backing up together, especially on the lowest floor of the house, points toward the main sewer line.
A plumber can run a camera scope down the line to see exactly what's causing the recurring blockage rather than guessing — this is standard practice before recommending a repair, and a reputable plumber should be willing to show you the footage.
Chemical drain cleaners used repeatedly on the same clog can actually damage older pipes over time, so if the same drain keeps backing up, it's worth stopping the DIY chemical route and getting an actual diagnosis.
